Mary Gabriele
The term icon, from Greek eikon or image, often refers to the image par excellence: the Christ. The Icon is not simply a piece of art, as it also explains the Scriptures. The origins of icons date back to the V century in Byzantium, with the arrival of a Virgin with Child (Odegitria), attributed to S. Luke. The most ancient icons that have been preserved until our day date back to the VI century. The craft itself is time consuming and requires precision; all of the materials are natural, including the wooden board, prepared with animal glue, cloth and chalk. Gold is pure 23 k, colours are natural earths and mineral pigments diluted in egg-tempera. Mary only uses the ancient craft techniques and materials.
